Fearing she might wake Julius, she stayed silent. As soon as they crossed the threshold, she whispered urgently, “Put me down.”

But Arthur didn’t. He carried her straight into his private room, gently placing her beside the bed. He stood in front of her, his eyes never leaving her face.

Charlotte frowned, her patience wearing thin. “What’s going

on?”

She caught the unmistakable scent of alcohol on his breath and felt a surge of caution. She didn’t want to provoke him when he was drunk. God knows what he was capable of when he was drunk.

She tried to stand to distance herself from him.

But Arthur wouldn’t let her go. His hands gripped her shoulders firmly, keeping her in place. “Sit down,” he said. “Let me look at you.”

Charlotte’s confusion only deepened. She glanced up at him, meeting his intense gaze. Now, there was a blaze in his eyes, an intense fervor that caused her heart to flutter wildly. She averted her gaze swiftly, as though the very sight of him could scorch her.
