A waiter approached them with a courteous smile, leading them to their seats. As they walked, Charlotte couldn’t help but notice how Arthur seemed to subtly close the gap between them.

The lights in the hall dimmed as the auction began, leaving the stage bathed in a focused glow. Charlotte turned to glance at Arthur. In the faint light, it was hard to make out the expression on his face.

Once everyone was settled, Jennifer, the chairwoman of the charity foundation, stepped onto the stage. She delivered a well–rehearsed speech, setting the tone for the night, and soon, the auction got underway.

The early items were rare gemstones–beautiful, but not particularly exciting. Even so, their starting bids already exceeded 10 million dollars.
