Chapter 238

The fact that Elizabeth introduced her as Isaac's girlfriend upset Gwen. She shot up and approached them. "I see Isaac has gotten himself a new girlfriend, Elizabeth. That's fast."

She rolled her eyes and sneered. "He got engaged with my daughter yesterday and changed girlfriends today. So you see, Isaac is nothing but a cheater. An oathbreaker." Gwen's voice was starting to get shriller, and venom dripped from her gaze.

Patricia was used to Gwen's antics. She held Elizabeth's hands, telling her to shrug it off.

Elizabeth had been in this circle for many years. She was kind, but she was no coward who would brook an insult of this level. Elizabeth shook her head at Patricia and turned her attention to Gwen. "Mrs. Aniston, neither me nor my husband knows about this engagement. Did we actually talk to you about this?"

That was an exit strategy Isaac left behind. He only brought a servant along for the proposal, not his family. That alone was enough to tell everyone he didn't care about the marriage. He was just playing along.

Gwen froze. "You didn't come for the proposal, but everyone saw how grand the engagement banquet was. He loves Adeline." She turned her attention to Patricia. "I guess MissAniston is smarter than she looks. She managed to make Isaac cancel the engagement on the very same day."

The ladies turned their gazes to Patricia and fell into hushed discussions.

Their husbands were rich and powerful. Scores of women would kill just to sleep with them, and these ladies harbored a deep grudge against beautiful homewreckers. Gwen's suggestive statement whipped them up into a frenzy, and they were directing their anger toward their husbands' mistresses onto Patricia.

Gwen was a manipulative woman. She easily made Patricia everyone's enemy.

Elizabeth looked at Patricia. She brought her along to tell everyone who she really was, but she was now on her own. After all, she would have to join these gatherings frequently after she and Isaac got married. If she wouldn't say anything to all the insults that were hurled at her, she had no right to marry Isaac.

So Elizabeth said nothing. The old ladies were her best friends, and they knew Elizabeth was testing this girl, so they said nothing as well.

Patricia smiled. "Mrs. Aniston, if I can sway Isaac's decision, then that means your daughter doesn't mean anything to him." She raised her hand and pushed her hair back, revealing her beautiful collarbone. "But don't call me a homewrecker. Isaac hasn't married your daughter yet. You can't possibly be so delusional as to think Adeline is already married to him, can you?"
