Chapter 54:

Belinda was crouched by the roadside, idly pulling at the grass from a flowerbed as Madisyn’s voice buzzed with irritation through the phone.

“I’ve been telling you forever to get your own car, but you brushed it off, saying Kristopher had enough cars to go around, and that buying one would be just throwing money away.”

Madisyn’s tone was thick with frustration. “And look where that got you? That jerk has taken off with Miss Miller, and here you are, stuck without a ride!”

Remaining poised, Belinda continued to yank at the grass. “I guess it’s time I got a car. It really is a hassle each time I come to visit Anthony.”

“You’re still thinking about visiting the Cox family?”

Madisyn sounded incredulous. “Aren’t you and Kristopher getting a divorce? Once everything’s settled, you won’t have to deal with his family ever again!”

Belinda’s hold on her phone tightened just a bit. “You’re right.” Pushing herself up tiredly, she stretched her limbs. “I’ve been waiting forever. When are you coming?”

Before Madisyn could reply, a voice from her office cut in.

“Madisyn, can you review this?”

Belinda exhaled softly and sat down on a nearby rock, realizing that Madisyn was still tangled up at work and nowhere close to leaving. “That’s fine.”

After a brief interaction with her colleague, Madisyn’s voice softened, tinged with regret. “Belinda…”
