Chapter 188

"What's so funny?" Lysander asked.

"Darling," Elara said with a grin, "I feel like your thoughts are getting more and more upright these days. If I don't work on improving myself, I won't be able to keep up with you." "You really do need to work on that," Lysander replied matter-of-factly.

Elara huffed. "You're so annoying. You spend all day teaching other people at work, and then you come home and start lecturing me. I don't even want to talk to you anymore." She leaned against him, noticing how he had become so serious and straight-laced in his speech lately.

Probably because of his job, she thought. He wasn't nearly as fun or cute as he used to be.

When they got home, Elara fell asleep leaning against Lysander.

After parking the car, he carefully carried her inside and placed her on the couch. Just as he was settling her down, his phone

rang.

The sound of his voice stirred Elara awake. She blinked her eyes open, hearing him talking on the phone as he sat beside her, careful not to disturb her.

Elara reached out and held his hand. He glanced at her and gently clasped her hand in his as he continued his call.

When he finally hung up, he turned his attention to her. Noticing that she was intently playing with his fingers, he asked, "Are my fingers that fun to play with?" "You've got

calluses now," Elara said, tracing them with her thumb. "They used to be so smooth and nice to touch."

Although his hands were still beautiful, the roughness made her heart ache. She knew he never mentioned how hard thi were, but it must have been exhausting. Lysander glanced at his hand and shrugged. "You get used to it. It's nothing."

"Who was that on the phone just now?" Elara asked.

Standing up, Lysander removed his jacket, revealing his lean, toned waist beneath his shirt.

"It was about Jack," Lysander replied, meeting her gaze. "They got a little heavy-handed while taking him down. He wasn't lucky this time. He ended up with a broken bone. They just wanted to let me know." Hearing Jack's name, Elara thought back to how helpless he had seemed when confronted by them and the beating that followed. Yet Lysander's calm, matter-of-fact tone made it all seem perfectly reasonable. She studied him for a moment, then chuckled. "Why do I feel like you're getting more scheming these days?"

Instead of replying, Lysander called out, "Hey, Ursa."

Ursa quickly appeared. "What can I do for you, Mr. Hawthorne?"

"Is dinner ready? Elara must be hungry," Lysander said.
