On the other side of town, Wesley walked Charlotte downstairs. Just as she was about to get into her car, he suddenly spoke up. “Miss Sterling, what do you think. of my mother?”

Charlotte blinked, caught off guard by the question. “Your mother? She’s wonderful. Why do you ask?”

“That’s not exactly what I meant.” Wesley’s lips curled into a gentle smile. “I don’t know why, but you feel familiar to me. You’re different from other women I know. If you don’t mind… would you consider being my mother’s goddaughter?”

Charlotte stared at him in surprise. “Me?”

“You’ve seen how much she cares about you–almost more than she cares about me,” Wesley said with a shrug. “Ever since she met you here in the city, she’s been happier than I’ve seen her since we left Eldermere. If my father and the rest of the family knew about this, they’d be delighted.”

Charlotte lowered her gaze, an inexplicable sense of foreboding tugging at her heart. She couldn’t explain it, but something told her she’d regret saying no.

“Is this awkward for you?” Wesley asked gently.

She looked back up at him. “Not at all. It’s just… I’ll be leaving the city soon. I’m worried-”

“That’s nothing to worry about. Wherever you go, just let us know. We’ll visit. It’s just a plane ride away,” Wesley replied, unconcerned by the distance.
