Regret Novel 191

“Who actually believes that if I lose the baby, she’ll finally get her chance? You’ve had countless opportunities to trust me, but you never did. Not once have you ever suspected the person who’s most likely behind all this. So please, stop pretending you’re doing this for my sake and spare me these pointless gestures.”

Before Evander could respond, Charlotte turned away and left.

She walked down the corridor, pressing a hand to her chest, the ache inside growing heavier with every step. Her emotions surged–frustration tangled with a bitterness she couldn’t swallow, leaving her furious and hurt in equal measure.

Back at the nurse’s station, Charlotte met with the head nurse to discuss her mother’s situation. Deep down, she trusted Nurse Denton–she didn’t believe she

would ever harm her.

But disappointment was written all over the head nurse’s face. “So, there’s no way

to reverse the termination, is there?”

Charlotte hesitated, unable to give her any guarantees. With Evander involved, what could she possibly do to change his mind?

“I understand. Thank you for trying.”

The head nurse left Charlotte’s office quietly.

She’d barely made it back to the nurses‘ desk when Tricia called her over.

The head nurse looked puzzled. “Director Winthrop, is there something you need?”

Tricia glanced toward Charlotte’s office, then turned back, stopping right in front of her. “Don’t you want to clear your mother’s name?”

“Director Winthrop, I’m not sure what you mean…”
