Regret Novel 211

“But once I’m gone, Tricia will be right by his side. No one will stand in their way anymore. For her sake, he’ll sign the papers. It’s only a matter of time.”

“When you get there, let me know,” her friend said softly.

Charlotte’s eyes curved with a crescent smile. “I will.”

“Going somewhere?”

Evander sat in his wheelchair, arms resting on the chair’s sides, fingers tightly interlaced. A bodyguard pushed him forward at a slow, measured pace.

Charlotte’s smile froze for a heartbeat, panic flickering in her eyes.

Wesley glanced at Evander. “So the rumors are true–Mr. Howard’s recovering in the hospital.”

Evander offered a cool nod. “Appreciate your concern, Mr. Rayburn. You really are living up to the reputation of the Howard family’s future son–in–law.”

Wesley’s smile faded. “I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.”

“Having second thoughts, Mr. Rayburn?”

Wesley’s voice was calm, but his eyes were sharp. “I didn’t refuse you in front of everyone as a gesture of courtesy. After all, if this blows up, it’s the Howard family that will come out looking bad. You wouldn’t really force me to marry your cousin, would you?”

Evander shifted in his chair, propping his head on one hand, his gaze drifting past Wesley to Charlotte, who stood quietly behind him. “I just hope your grandfather doesn’t take it too seriously.”

Wesley’s expression turned cold.
