Regret Novel 225

The man looked genuinely surprised. “You really think she puts up with all that ridicule and humiliation because she cares more about power and status? If that were true, she’d have no reason to endure any of it. Your grandmother adores her, and she’s already married into the family–what’s the point of putting up with that abuse? It makes no sense.”

Evander’s long fingers curled around the stem of his wineglass, but he said nothing. The man went on, “So many women want to marry into the Howard family–even Tricia couldn’t get in. But for some reason, your grandmother chose Charlotte.”

“You know how sharp your grandmother is; do you really think she can’t see through Charlotte’s intentions? And yet, she still let Charlotte in. That tells me Charlotte isn’t as shallow as you think.”

Evander pressed his lips into a thin line. All these years, his resentment toward the Sterling family had stemmed mainly from Xavier, who, as his father–in–law, had tried to leverage the relationship for personal gain time and again.

Charlotte had only ever asked him for one thing, and even then, Evander knew it was for the Sterling family’s sake.

He couldn’t stand how the Sterlings flaunted their sudden rise in status. But aside from Xavier, what had Charlotte ever done?

She’d never once tried to exploit the Howard family’s connections. In public, she kept their relationship discreet. She hadn’t even asked him for a single piece of jewelry–not a purse, not a dress, nothing. Even if she cared about appearances and hid it well, he’d once given her a black credit card.

To this day, that card remained untouched.

Even when it came to the divorce settlement, all she asked for was a hundred
