The receptionist gestured to the left. “Just down there.”

“Thank you.”

Charlotte walked up to the office door and knocked.

When she heard a response, she opened the door and stepped inside.

These offices were all shared by two people. Besides Director Wolfe, a young female doctor was also present.

Director Wolfe glanced at Charlotte, momentarily taken aback. “And you are?”

“Hello. I’m Charlotte–I interviewed with the deputy director last week. Here’s my résumé. Looks like we’ll be colleagues from now on.”

She handed her file over.

Director Wolfe flipped through the pages, eyebrows raised in surprise. “You were chief surgeon at your last hospital? And you’re this young–and, well, this striking?” The young doctor looked just as astonished.

Charlotte merely smiled and didn’t respond. After a moment, she asked, “You’re my senior, so I’ll call you Professor Wolfe, if that’s all right. Also, could you tell me where my office is?”

Pleased by the respect, and gratified by the deference to his experience, Director Wolfe was clearly satisfied with her. He turned to the younger woman beside him. “Noreen, would you show Director Sterling to her office?”

Noreen Lennox stood up, gave Charlotte a quick once–over, and replied without much enthusiasm, “Follow me.”
