Chapter 20

(Cylan's POV)

I walked into the infirmary, for my appointment. I had been feeling a bit off for a week, since the day I had taken the drugs prescribed by Dr. Nixon. I knew I shouldn't questioned her expertise, but it was my health, and I couldn't just sit still. As I entered the examination room, I noticed Emily, the girl I had seen on the stairs, cleaning a spill from the previous patient. She looked up and caught my eye, giving me a brief smile before returning to her task. I ignored her, remembering how she had tried to give me unsolicited advice.

Dr. Nixon bustled in, smiling as usual. She turned to corner and upon seeing Emily, her mouth fixed into a thin line. "Hurry up, Emily. You're paid to work, not waste time." She turned to me, her smile returning. "Ah, Cylan, take a seat on the bed, please."

I did as instructed, trying to calm my racing mind. But when the medic brought in the small brown tablet that had made me feel worse last time, I spoke up. "I don't want to take that. It didn't work before."

Dr. Nixon's smile faltered for a moment when I complained about the drug. But it quickly returned in full force, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Oh, Cylan, I understand your concerns, but trust me, this is what's best for you."

I didn't like her patronizing tone. It made me feel stupid like I didn't know what I was talking about. "But it didn't work last time," I protested. "It made me feel worse."

Dr. Nixon's smile faltered, and she leaned forward, her voice condescending. "Cylan, you're in no position to choose. You're the carrier of the STD due to your choices, and I'm the doctor. You'll take what I prescribe."

I felt a chill run down my spine as her words sank in. "What?"

Dr. Nixon's smile never wavered. "Well, let's try it again, shall we?" She nodded to Emily, who was still cleaning up the spill. "Emily, could you please call in Medic Thompson who is waiting outside?"

Emily looked up, her eyes meeting mine for a brief moment before she nodded and headed out of the room.

Dr. Nixon turned back to me, her voice soothing. "Cylan, I promise you, this is what's best. You're not thinking clearly right now, and I need to make decisions for your health."

I felt a sense of unease as Medic Thompson entered the room, his expression firm. "Hold out your arm, please, Cylan," he instructed.

I hesitated, but Dr. Nixon's smile reassured me. "It's okay, dear. This will all be over soon."
