The next morning, Maja awoke, freshened up, grabbed a quick bite, and noticed Quentin looked particularly serene, “Is your teacher’s condition worse?” “She can’t even speak anymore.” It looked like she might only have a week left. Maja wasn’t sure how to offer comfort, so she just patted him on the shoulder. They walked together toward Outer Island High School. First thing, Maja handled Quentin’s paperwork at the administration office and completed a brief assessment before settling into her temporary office. There were only two art instructors at the school, and neither could be absent. Glancing at the schedule, Maja was surprised to find that although Forbidden Island seemed more backward than the outside world, the students here received a well-rounded education with classes in piano, baking, horseback riding, and more. The frequency of these classes was not high, but they touched on everything. Were they trying to awaken every possible talent a person might have? Some folks weren’t cut out for academic subjects like literature, math, or foreign languages, but they had a real knack for things like baking. With such a curriculum, the school could identify such talents, and these students could also be called geniuses. Maja felt a mix of surprise and disgust upon reviewing the curriculum. It seemed as though the students were being squeezed dry. If they struggled with the basics, the higher-ups would do their best to unearth other talents to prove that these students weren’t worthless. Every talented student was worth studying. She frowned deeply, her scalp tingling at the thought. Were most of Outer Island’s graduates being turned into lab rats for human experiments?
