Wade didn’t give a rat’s tail about getting back at Maja; his mind was on the more pressing matter of his potential injuries. “Get to the hospital! Move it, now!” he bellowed, as him men half-dragged, half-carried him out. Sitting back in her chair, Maja booted up the nearby computer and started to research the process of acquiring companies around here. She was struck by the simplicity and brutality of it all – it was a world where cash was king, unlike the intricate systems back home. In this game of wealth, whoever had the deepest pockets ruled, and outsiders who stumbled in, often on the run, were usually strapped for cash. Someone like Maja, with billions on a single card, was a rarity. She suddenly devised a quick way to gain notoriety and find Ian – become famous here. She wasn’t sure how deep BK’s tendrils were in this place. If the entrance to Forbidden Island was crawling with BK’s goons, they should have been on her and Ian from day one. Yet Quentin’s tattoo hinted at something else – that BK hadn’t fully infiltrated Forbidden Island. Instead, they’d spun a colossal lie about tattoos, making them sacred to the students here. The knock on the office door was polite this time around. “You are the new Madam, right? The principal wants to see you.” The messenger was a woman in her forties. She gave Maja a once-over, then swiftly averted her gaze with cool indifference. Maja rose and made her way to the principal’s office, where a painting she’d done was on display. It had taken her just minutes to do, proof enough she could fill the vacant teaching spot. The principal, white-haired and sporting glasses with a chain, had about him an air of strict formality, “Ms. Pennyfeather, I must say, you have quite the talent.” Maja was about to compliment the principal’s appreciation for the arts, thinking he hadn’t summoned her over Wade’s mishap. But his next words made her eyelashes flutter. “You’ve just joined us, Maja, and might not be aware that the Brennan family funded our largest building. Wade is their only son. No matter his shortcomings, he’s set to inherit their estate. Your kick might have more serious repercussions than you think.” The only son nearly crippled – that was beyond ‘serious’. As the principal’s finger danced over the painting, his tone softened. “It’s a pity you’ve crossed the Brennans. With your talent, you could’ve been teaching at a high school on Middle Island in no time, if not for your self-sabotage.” The irony didn’t escape Maja. “So, what? A male student tries to assault a female teacher, and that’s legal here?” “In Outer Island, anything a rich kid does is lawful. Unless you’re richer than them, which if you were, you wouldn’t be teaching, now would you? Sometimes, you just have to accept your lot in life.” Maja
