Chapter 104

Christiana’s POV.

I sat behind my massive desk in my office, tapping my fingers rhythmically on the polished mahogany. The air was heavy with tension, and the clicking of my fingers seemed to echo louder in the room. My jewelry company was thriving, the business booming beyond expectations. But I couldn’t focus on that, not when there was a storm swirling inside me. My eyes flicked over to Grace, my P.A., who stood rigid at the side, her hands clasped nervously in front of her.

“Grace, where are the reports I asked for?” I snapped, harsher than necessary. I could see her flinch slightly, but she quickly collected herself and handed me the file.

“They’re right here, ma’am. I finished them early this morning,” she said, her voice small.

“Good. Now get back to the other tasks. I don’t want any delays today. Not a second out of place.” My tone left no room for argument. Grace nodded swiftly and hurried out of my office.

I leaned back in my chair, letting out a long, frustrated sigh. I wasn’t like this before, this strict, this sharp. But everything was different now. My whole life was spiraling out of control, and I needed something to hold onto, something to give me a sense of control. But no matter how strict I was with my employees, no matter how efficiently I ran my company, it didn’t fill the hollow ache that gnawed at me.

My children.

They still weren’t speaking to me. It had been days now, and their silence was like a dagger twisting in my heart. All because I tried to protect them, to stop them from seeing him. Their father. The man who had disappeared from our lives for so long. But instead of understanding, they had turned on me. Now, when I called out to them, they barely responded. When I walked into a room, they avoided me.

I closed my eyes, rubbing my temples as the weight of it all pressed down on me. How did I get here? This was the first real fight I’d ever had with them, and it had blown up in my face. They didn’t like me anymore. They didn’t understand that I was doing this for them, for their safety. And now, they were slipping away from me, and it hurt more than I could bear.

“Ma’am?” Grace’s hesitant voice broke through my thoughts as she stepped back into the room. “The television…there’s some breaking news you might want to see.”

I frowned, sitting up straighter. Grace nervously turned the flat–screen TV on the wall, and I watched as the news anchor appeared. My stomach tightened with unease as I listened.

According to sources, her legal team, led by a top defense attorney, managed to clear her name without any need for bail. And in a surprising twist, it seems Madam Margret Alistair, a prominent figure known for her influence, had a
