Jonathan wore a look of calm acceptance. “Ella’s taken the brunt of it all until you came back.” Meaning, now it was Gabriel’s turn. Unfazed, Gabriel pulled out his phone, “Let’s see if there are any new gigs lined up?” The room erupted with laughter. As they were wrapping up dinner, Estelle noticed that Sophia, sitting beside her, looked a little under the weather. She ladled some soup for her, “What’s wrong?” Sophia clutched Estelle’s hand. “Estelle, could you check my forehead? Do I have a fever?” Upon touching her brow, Estelle found it burning hot. “What’s going on? I’ll get someone to call a doctor!” “What’s the matter?” Old Mr. Quintin looked over. “Sophia’s got a fever!” Estelle announced. Everyone quieted down, their gazes filled with concern for Sophia. Sophia waved them off, “It’s nothing, no need for a doctor. I just spent a bit too long outside with Robin last night, probably caught a cold in the breeze.” Old Mr. Quintin frowned, “You know you’re not the healthiest, prone to sickness. What were you doing out in the cold night air?” Sophia, too weak to argue and feeling a bit guilty, just hung her head in silence. After leaving the Lamont estate the previous evening, Robin had walked her home. She didn’t want to part with him just yet, so they lingered outside her building. Who would’ve thought that a little while under the night sky would lead to a cold! “Should we go to the hospital, or call a doctor here?” Magdalen suggested. “No need, really, I know my body. I get colds so often, a few pills and I’ll be fine!” Sophia stood up. “I’m done eating anyway, I’m heading upstairs.” “I’ll come with you, find you some medicine!” Estelle followed her up. “Your room’s heating is busted, and the repair guys haven’t shown up yet. Stay in Jason’s room for now, it’s snowing, and he might not make it back today!” Old Mr. Quintin instructed. “Got it!” Sophia waved weakly, assuring everyone to carry on without worry. Once upstairs and in Jason’s room, Estelle fetched some cold medicine and fever reducer for Sophia. Lying in bed, Sophia inhaled the familiar cool scent of the sheets and couldn’t help but chuckle, “It smells just like Jason, I might have trouble sleeping!” Estelle turned to her, “Why’s that?” “It’s like he’s right here watching over me!” Sophia mumbled, her eyes already closing. After making sure Sophia was asleep, Estelle drew the curtains, turned on the humidifier, and quietly left the room. An hour later, Estelle returned to check on Sophia, who was now fever-free and drenched in sweat. Her loose cotton shirt was twisted and sticking to her skin uncomfortably. Estelle took off Sophia’s clothes, covering her again with the blanket before leaving her to rest. With the weather still dreary, Estelle and her companions left Old Mr.

by four in the afternoon. Before departing, Estelle entrusted the servants with Sophia’s care and to ensure she took her medicine. “Rest assured, I’ll have someone keep an eye on her,” Old Mr. Quintin promised. Estelle nodded, said her goodbyes to Old Mr. Quintin, Gabriel, and the others, and left with Jonathan. The snow had ceased, but the skies remained overcast. Estelle and Magdalen went their separate ways at Old Mr. Quintin’s gate, each getting into their cars. Once inside the vehicle, Jonathan helped Estelle with her seatbelt and casually checked her forehead. Estelle smiled, “I’m not the one with a cold!” Jonathan was concerned she might have caught something from Sophia after spending so much time upstairs, but thankfully, Estelle seemed in
