Nola’s heart tightened as she stared at Elvis, dumbfounded. She didn’t expect him to say such things and she couldn’t even argue back.

“I’m just reminding you,” Nola said.

“I don’t need it! Nola, you are my legal wife, but remember, just my legal wife. Don’t try to flatter me, stay away from me, and don’t have any extra delusions,” Elvis said coldly.

“You’re drunk.”

His words felt like thorns piercing Nola’s heart. She felt as if she had been slapped in the face. She shouldn’t have been even a little good to Elvis. It was best to draw a clear line between them, as that was the most appropriate way for them to coexist.

Nola had crossed the line herself and forgotten that their marriage was based on a business deal. It was just a business transaction after all.

“No matter what you do, you can’t replace Nancy’s place in my heart. In the future, stay away from me and stop trying to seduce me. Do you remember that?” Elvis said, feeling annoyed. He couldn’t get rid of her face at work, and now he had to see her again at home.

What was wrong with him? He had seen many women before. Nola was just a non–compliant little wildcat. What was there to think about?

Elvis coldly avoided Nola, as if she was a terrifying virus.

Watching his slightly embarrassed figure, Nola sneered, “Sure, Mr. Grayson.”

Elvis paused for a moment and then went upstairs without hesitation.

Nola felt uneasy in her heart. Her previous worries had come true. She had just tried to care about Elvis and hoped they could live a good life together. Maybe the future would be beautiful. Who knew that her fantasy would be so short–lived and easily shattered?

It was her own fault. She thought too much, and now she was paying the price.
