Chapter 108
“I just do not get it,” said Adam. “You married Mr. Bateson, a handsome and wealthy man. Why would you get a divorce?”
“He doesn‘t love me.” Emma‘s reply was calm and solemn.
It took her a long time before being able to calmly tell others that Trevor did not love her.
Surprise flashed across Adam‘s eyes. He tcased, “I did not think someone as high and mighty as that man would still fail in something so common.”
When he saw her confusion at his statement, he scornfully tacked on, “I mean, he is disgraceful enough to think the grass is greener on the other side.”
As everyone in their social circle knew, there had always been rumors about the intimacy between Trevor and Crystal.
Just like everyone, Adam had previously thought it must have been because there was something wrong with Trevor‘s wife. However, when he found out Emma was the ex wife, Adam found himself confused at Trevor‘s decision to continue his affair with Crystal.
In his opinion, Emma was a much better woman. “Don‘t say that,” she rebuked with a chuckle. “Everyone has their own preferences.”
It did not matter how perfect she was, Trevor still did not love her. Furthermore, Crystal‘s family was far more powerful than hers.
“You‘re still young, so focus on your career.” After saying what she wanted, she turned to leave.
“Emma,” he called out, unwilling to just let things be.
“I may be young, but I have a mature mind,” he resolutely stated. “I know what I
want.”
She was about to reply when she looked up to find Trevor stomping over with an icy aura surrounding him. Seeing that, she frowned.
What did Trevor want now?
When Adam followed the direction of her gaze and spotted Trevor, he instinctively moved to stand in front of her, blocking her from Trevor‘s view. In response, Trevor shot him a cold glare before saying to Emma, “We need to talk.”
Adam‘s first reaction was to ask why, but Emma stopped him.
“Okay,” she said in agreement.
There were plenty of people at the party. Hence, she decided to agree to his suggestion because she did not want to argue with Trevor in public.
Before walking away, she turned to give Adam a placating smile. “Focus on what you need to do.”
Although Adam did not like what was going to happen, he could do nothing since she had already agreed to talk to Trevor.
The two walked out of the hall. Thereafter, Trevor immediately headed toward his car and held the door open for her. After shooting him a look, Emma stepped in. She did not want people to stare, after all.
However, he did not speak of where they were going. After getting into the driver‘s seat, he drove off with a blank look on his face.
After some thought, she called Wesley. “Pardon me, Mr. Zurich, but I have to leave early due to some matters that I need to handle.”
She was attending the party as Wesley‘s companion. It would be rude to disappear without a word. Hence, she had to let him know.
However, just as she said that, she heard a scoff from Trevor as if he was laughing at her for reporting back to Wesley.
Emma ignored his passive–aggressive attitude though, as Wesley worriedly asked, “I heard about it from Adam. Do you need help?”
“I am fine.” Since she replied calmly, he did not push further.
The car soon pulled up at a beach. It was only after Trevor got out of the car that he realized he had selected the wrong spot for their chat.
Even though it was summer, the air at the beach was still quite freezing and Emma was only covered by a formal dress made of thin fabric.
When he saw her wrapping her arms around herself while shivering, he internally berated himself for his decision.
However, this was the only place near the event hall that was peaceful. He did not think further before driving off.
In the blink of an eye, he found himself pulling off his suit jacket and putting it around her shoulders in an attempt to help keep the cold away from her.
Startled, she took a step backward to avoid touching his jacket.
“Thank you, but I am not cold.” No matter how chilly the breeze was, she would refuse any and all signs of concern from himn.
He shot her a look before stepping forward to wrap his jacket around her in an absolutely domineering manner that brooked no argument.
This time, she did not step away. After all, she did not want to be pressed into his embrace, helpless against his next actions.
She plastered on a smile and secured the jacket around her. “Thank you.”
It was only then that he let go of the jacket and stepped away.
However, he soon furiously demanded, “Emma, you would actually divorce me over a falsified pregnancy test?”
Before she could answer, he continued, “Nothing happened between us. I had never touched her, even back when we were dating. I did not lay a hand on her during our marriage, and especially not after our divorce!”
Trevor had only wanted to explain to her that he did not have an affair with Crystal during the time he had been married to Emma.
For some reason, he bluried out everything about his relationship with Crystal, including the time he dated her and after his divorce as if he was afraid she would not believe him.
She was shocked by his confession. Did that mean he had never been intimate with Crystal?
However, that was not the issue with his declaration.
Emma soon snapped back to her senses. “You seem to be confused about something, Trevor,” she calmly responded.
“What is it?” he asked.
“I did not divorce you because of some outside interference, but rather,” She continued in a self–deprecating tone, “Because you did not love me.”
She turned to look out at the sea as she quietly continued, “Do you remember that birthday party when your grandfather urged you to have a child with me? You said I did not deserve to be your child‘s mother. You even said you could not have a child with a woman you did not love.”
His face went stiff when he recalled Christopher‘s birthday last year. He did say that
to his grandfather because he thought she had asked Christopher to push him into having a child. He thought she did it so that she could be Mrs. Bateson forever.
Trevor only realized how wrong he had been when she insisted on a divorce, stating how unimportant her status as Mrs. Bateson was.
“My heart is made of flesh and blood as well,” Emma continued without even bothering to look at him. “Time and time again, you hurt me. I feel pain as well. I only applied for a divorce because of dejection. A relationship will never die out because of someone else.”
Even now, Trevor did not understand that logic. It showed that he had yet to even realize his inadequacy when it came to love.
He likely still thought everyone should love and obey him unconditionally.
There was a long moment of silence after she said that.
Eventually, she took off his suit jacket and handed it back to him. “Can I leave now?” she asked calmly.
This was the first time she told Trevor what she truly thought and it was also the last time.
In the future, when she found someone else to love, she would definitely choose someone who knew how love worked.
“Why did you not tell me when you found out Crystal had faked the test?” Trevor asked, ignoring the offered piece of clothing.
“We were already divorced. Why would I tell you?” There was a hint of aloof mockery in her voice as she then added, “Perhaps you might accuse me of slander.”
He had always assumed she was a schemer. If she lodged a complaint to him about Crystal, he might insult her instead.
Emma then shoved the jacket into his hands before walking away.
Trevor hurried after her and grabbed her by the arm. “I am sorry,” he reluctantly said.
