Chapter 109
Emma did not expect an apology from Trevor. Still, she was able to remain calm. “I accept your apology.”
“Can you drive me back to the party?” she then asked.
Her nonchalance made him rage boil in him. In fact, he had felt like exploding since the moment he found out what Arianna and Crystal did.
In spite of that, Emma acted like none of it concerned her.
When she saw the fiery glare he shot at her, she instantly walked away.
“It‘s fine,” she said, pulling out her phone. “I will just hail a cab.”
As soon as she said that, he pulled her back by the arm.
He was going to tell her that he would drive her back, but he had acted so hastily that he pulled her with more force than he had intended to. As she had a pair of high heels on that evening, his actions caused her lo sprain an ankle.
The pain was so bad that she nearly collapsed to the ground. He hurriedly caught her and asked with a frown, “What happened?”
The dress she wore that evening was made of soft and smooth fabric. Hence, when he wrapped his other arm around her waist to support her, it felt as though he was touching her bare skin. He immediately went tense.
Despite that, the pain was so overwhelming that she did not care how close they were. She looked down to study her feet. “I think I sprained an ankle.”
Trevor was at a loss for words.
Was he cursed with bad luck? How could he have made her twist an ankle just from grabbing her by the arm?
Previously, he had only ever hurt her heart. Now, he was hurting her physically.
“I‘m sorry. I underestimated my strength,” he immediately apologized while realizing he had been apologizing a lot recently.
“I‘ll drive you to the hospital,” he continued, lifting her up bridal–style.
She was startled by his sudden action. “I should be able to walk,” she awkwardly stammered. “Put me down.”
His car was parked not far from where they were. So, she insisted that she was fine walking back to the car.
It was extremely awkward to be carried by her ex–husband in his arms, especially since her dress was thin and flimsy.
However, he ignored her and strode over to his car.
He then placed her on the passenger seat before kneeling down to examine her foot,
She felt a flush rise to her cheeks as warmth radiated from his palms.
How she wished she could dig a hole and bury herself right then and there. “Let the doctors at the hospital handle it,” she said, blushing as she shrank back.
“There is no need to be shy,” he responded as he massaged her ankle.
Her heart skipped. She prayed that he did not continue with the usual line of “He had already seen her naked, after all.”
Thankfully, he remained silent. After a few more minutes, he let go of her ankle, shot her a look, and stepped into the driver‘s scal.
After a while, he received a call from Alice.
Arianna was likely home by now. Who knew what she would have said to Alice about that evening‘s events? Either way, Alice was definitely calling to interrogate him.
Hence, soon after he picked up, he spoke before Alice could say a single word. “Mom, Arianna has done something so unforgivable that I have shown her mercy by sending her abroad.”
Although Alice was frightened by the way he spoke, she still pushed on with her pleas on Arianna‘s behalf. “It was only something done hastily out of impulse. What if she apologized to Emma instead?”
“It‘s too late,” he said, scoffing.
They were already divorced. What would an apology from Arianna do?
“Furthermore, Mom,” he continued, doing his best to suppress his rage. “How could you say that what she did was only done out of impulse? It seems like you have spoiled her rotten. It is no longer suitable for her to live with you anymore.”
“Trevor!” What she heard made her seethe. “I am your mother! Are you trying to kill me?” she roared.
“Will you only stop your nonsense after I die?”
His head pounded at what she said. He did not think Alice would threaten to commit suicide just so she could protect Arianna.
Additionally, she was only trying to protect her daughter because she wanted to protect her own interests. Had she ever considered his feelings?
What Arianna and Crystal did to Emma during their marriage was bad enough that it caused their divorce. How could Alice still want to protect Arianna after knowing that?
In her eyes, was he just a tool that could bring her wealth and glory?
At that thought, he impatiently retorted, “She has to bear the consequences for her mistakes.”
He then hung up, not wanting to hear her hysterical screaming.
Due to the phone call, an awkward silence hung in the air.
Emma spoke up after thinking for a while, “It is all in the past. You do not have to punish Arianna at all.”
“To you, it is in the past. To me, everything has just started!” he shouted in anger.
Realizing just how bad his mood was, she decided to keep quiet.
Let him do as he pleased.
She glanced at her phone and called Wesley. “Mr. Zurich, I would not make it back to the party. I sprained my ankle.”
“How did it happen?” Wesley asked worriedly. “Is it really bad? Where are you? I will go to you right away.”
“lı isn‘t that serious. Mr. Bateson is currently driving me to the hospital,” she swiftly replied.
She had addressed Trevor as formally as possible
“I‘m sorry.” Wesley was beating himself up over the situation. “You attended the party as my companion, yet I did not protect you.”
His apologies, however, only made her embarrassed. “It is my fault.”
“Please let me know your condition as soon as you are done at the hospital,” he said, sighing.
She immediately agreed to do so.
Alter ending the call, she realized the air inisicle the car was tenser than before. Still, she ignored it and stared out the window at the lights flashing by.
Back when she was married to Trevor, they rarely sal in the same car.
They would only ever do so when visiting Christopher or attending family events, Otherwise, they would go their own separate ways,
He would go out and wage war in business deals while she stayed home all alone.
Outside of that home, they were like strangers to cach other.
He never once acknowledged her to other people, let alone attend parties with her as his companion.
Their marriage was a secret because he did not care about her, respect her, or thought about her.
When they pulled up at the hospital, he moved to carry her into the Emergency Department. However, she refused to let him do so.
There were a lot of people walking in and out of the hospital, so she did not want to be the center of attention.
“Get a wheclchair from the receptionist or I will hop my way over,” she said as she slowly stretched out her injured foot.
After all, it was not painful to the point that she could not hop her way over.
“Hop over?” he said, indignant rage rising in him.
Ha! She sure was willing to do anything and everything in order to avoid letting him carry her.
