The mother of the child who answered incorrectly began to educate her child. "Sweetie, is dog poop tasty?"

The child shook their head. "Then why would you want me to eat it?"

Another woman, amused and exasperated, laughed until tears welled up in her eyes. "Sweetheart, why can't it be me watching the dog lying on the ground eating poop? How hungry would I have to be to eat dog poop?"

The teacher suppressed her laughter and tried to keep her composure as she asked everyone, "Kids, is it really necessary for your moms to eat dog poop today? Why would your moms do that?"

This time, even the kids from other classes erupted in laughter. Brad, who was usually stern, glanced at Nadine, who was laughing so hard she was in tears, and a hint of affection flashed in his eyes.

How long had it been since he'd seen Nadine laugh? Not since she'd brought up the divorce, at least.

When they had just gotten married, he believed Nadine to be a manipulative woman who went out of her way to please Adam just to marry him and lacked other noteworthy qualities. Later on, he realized that she wasn't skilled at sucking up to Adam—his grandfather simply liked her.

After spending so much time in the ICU, drifting in and out of consciousness, the name that came out of his grandfather's lips was Nadine. When he loved someone, everything she did seemed right. When he didn't, even the way she breathed felt wrong.
