Chapter 57

Chapter 57.

Kex’s POV.

I stared at her, my gaze intense and unblinking. “Do you still want Astel?” I asked, my voice low and serious.

She choked on her food, coughing hard. I quickly passed her a cup of water, and she gulped it down, hitting her chest with her fist. She set the cup down and looked at me, her eyes calculating.

“What kind of question is that?” she asked, her voice breathless.

I met her gaze, unflinching. “A serious one,” I said.

“What’s your concern with me and my rejected mate?” she asked, rolling her eyes.

“I just want to know whether you’ve moved on or not,” I said trying to make my voice sound hard.

But I didn’t smile. “I don’t see why it’s any of your business,” she said, her voice teasing.

I let out a heavy sigh. “It’s just that every time there’s even the smallest opportunity, you bring up Astel. It’s weird to me because he never cared about you,” I said, my voice rising with frustration.

She let out a soft laugh. “It’s funny how you think I should just accept my rejection and move on like that,” she said, her voice tinged with sadness. She gave me a small, sad smile. “I guess it’s not that easy for me.”

“Why, Nelly?” I said, my voice rising with irritation. “Why do you care about him so much? He’s moved on, he’s with Shantel now.”

She shook her head, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Do you have any idea how many times I’ve asked myself what’s wrong with me that made him reject me?” she said, her voice shaking. “Do you have any idea of the humiliation I felt that day? How can I just move on?” she demanded, her voice rising high with emotion.

“There’s nothing wrong with you,” I said, trying to reassure her. “You’re perfect just the way you are.” But she just laughed sadly.

“That’s not what you said the first day we met,” she said, a hint of bitterness in her voice. “You told me I needed to lose weight, remember?”
