Chapter

A couple of days ago, Milka was still floating in the sweet haze of Mars constantly dropping marriage hints. She even told her mom, "Hey, are you free? Come out with me, let's check out some rings."

But then, just two days later, her parents' fighting blew up. Looking at rings never even crossed her mind after that.

Now, up here in the clouds, Milka gazed down at the patchwork of skyscrapers and winding rivers beneath the plane. "Mars, when did you learn how to fly?"

"The day I promised you, I hunted down the best instructor in my unit and begged him to teach me. Learned it all for you. Then you broke up with me."

Milka rolled her eyes. "So if I say we're done, you just agree? You knew I was angry. Why didn't you refuse?"

"You were upset, so was I. I'd just come back from a rough mission, beat up all over, and the first thing you said on the phone was that it was over. I got mad too.

After all these years, I never thought we'd actually split for good. When I finally calmed down, I tried to get leave to come see you, but you'd already left the country. I was so pissed, I nearly tore your front door off."

Milka had known he'd be angry, but it wasn't until later she realized Mars had vanished because he'd gotten sent on another emergency mission. Back then, she couldn't reach him at all, but deep down, she guessed he'd been called away. Still, she'd been young and hot-headed.

Besides, Mars always kept his word to her-every single time.

Except that once. He promised he'd come back, but he never did. He broke her trust.

With her parents' issues and all the chaos at home, she just couldn't manage to be calm or thoughtful.

Mars suddenly said, "It's just the two of us up
