Avery gave Cayden a feeling that no other woman could give him. She was like a fresh and delicious peach that suited his unique taste.

He felt that he had done a lot of things so that they could be together openly. However, Avery was still stuck in the same old position, which made him feel frustrated.

Avery could feel a bitterness in her heart upon listening to Cayden's words.

Yes, I know my place in his heart. But deep inside, I still suffer from an inexplicable inferiority complex. It's like once in a while, the emotional security that I have for our relationship will disappear.

Avery knew that Allie was the one to blame as the latter had always wanted to put an end to her relationship with Cayden. It was never his fault. In fact, he had always loved and protected her.

She looked into his eyes and said apologetically, “I'm sorry. I just couldn't help myself when your mom—”

“Why are you apologizing to me, Avery? You didn't do anything wrong. My family is just a little messy...”

Cayden took out a cigarette from his pocket. He wanted to light it up, but he stopped himself and put it down after recalling that the heater had been switched on in the room.

Avery noticed that he seemed to be addicted to smoking lately.

Cayden walked up to the floor-to-ceiling window silently and pulled open the curtains.

He looked into the darkness outside, a glint of helplessness flashed across his eyes. “I'm sorry, Avery, for making you suffer,” he said in a low and gentle voice.

He stood with his back facing her as he did not dare to turn around to look at her.

It was the first time that he had apologized to Avery solemnly. However, a simple apology was never enough to solve the complicated relationship that they had.

Avery, sitting quietly on the bed, was momentarily stunned by Cayden's apology.

Deep inside her heart, Cayden had always been a perfect man.

He's a blessed child and a proud figure whom everyone looks up to. But now, he's apologizing to me...

Cayden went on, “Over the years, I've always been alone. Even though I look like I'm living a good life, you have no idea how low my self-esteem was. I couldn't get rid of my status as an illegitimate child. When the accident occurred and I was on the brink of death, I didn't have any desire to live. You probably have no idea too that I suffered from depression when I was young. I had to take a lot of medicine to relieve the symptoms.

“Until that day, I went to that town and met you. Just like the sun, you brought joy and hope to my life. You didn't even realize how happy you made me feel. But you were too young; you were only a student in junior high at that time. I didn't dare to confess my feelings to you because I was afraid of scaring you away. I decided to keep my feelings to myself. Then, I left the town, taking my unrequited love with me. Little did I expect Lady Luck to smile on me again after a few years. I found out that you were going to become a surrogate mother because you needed money urgently. After pulling some strings, I managed to switch places with the man who was originally appointed for you. Finally, I got what I wanted. You became mine, and you even gave birth to two smart children for me.

“Avery, I thought we wouldn't meet again for the rest of my life. I'm grateful enough that you're the mother of my two children. I never imagine that our paths will cross once again. We've been through so much that I believe nothing will come between us if we persevere. Yet, the moment I decided to have a future with you by my side, you hesitated and stayed away from me.”

Here, Cayden frowned, seemingly trembling.

After taking a deep breath, he looked up and stared at the vast night sky with his dark eyes. He had mustered a lot of courage to voice everything that had been troubling him.

At that point, he did not even dare to look at her. He was afraid that she would notice the lack of self-esteem in his eyes.

Avery had been listening to him talking in his deep and hoarse voice that was tinged with sadness. She felt as if someone had stabbed her in the heart with a knife.

Somehow, she felt desolate when she looked at his broad back.

Slowly and quietly, she stood up and walked toward him. She extended her arms and circled his waist from behind.

As her soft body was pressed against his, she whispered to him, “I'm sorry, Cayden. It was all my fault. I will never hold back again.”

Cayden stiffened. He turned and noticed the deep frown on her face. He pulled her into his arms and said, “You dummy.”

She grinned at him innocently. Her pure and bright smile was enough to get rid of his sadness.

He carried her gently to the bed.

The sorrow in his eyes disappeared. As he stared at her delicate face, he said, “If you want to apologize, you need to show some sincerity. Satisfy me tonight and I will forgive you.”

Subsequently, he pinned her underneath him while holding her tiny waist.

His masculine smell and her sweet body scent lingered in the air, awakening Cayden's desire.

The apparent lust in his eyes caused Avery's body to shiver.
