The taxi sped down the road and stopped right at the entrance of a hospital that belonged to the Gibson family.

Upon alighting from the car, Avery gave the driver one hundred in cash and dashed straight to the ward without even waiting for the driver to return her the change.

Inside the spacious ward, the strong smell of disinfectants wafted through the air.

Meanwhile, Nina's petite figure curled up on the bed, appearing extremely piteous.

Avery's heart ached when she saw that, and her throat felt dry from distress. She was so heartbroken to see Nina's condition to the extent that she could not utter a word.

She approached and called out, “Nina...”

Lifting her head, Nina stared at Avery tearfully.

Avery pulled Nina into her arms, but when doing so, she accidentally touched Nina's injured abdomen and caused the latter to moan in agony.

Puzzled, Avery lifted Nina's hospital gown to see her stomach wrapped with layers of bandage. Avery's head was buzzing as her eyes widened in disbelief. “Your stomach...”

Nina's hair was disheveled. Her shoulder-length hair draped messily over her shoulders, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

What was more frightening was the sight of the blood-stained bandage, which gave Avery an ominous feeling.

Her fingers trembled as she questioned, “Who did this? Which b*stard hurt you? I'll go lodge a police report now!”

Nina began wailing loudly in Avery's embrace. Shaking her head, she whimpered, “No. You can't lodge a report. You can't...”

Avery might be oblivious to how powerful the Gibson family was, but Nina was well-aware of it.

“Don't be afraid, Nina. I'll seek justice for you! Tell me, who hurt you?” Avery asked again, her teeth chattering from the fury.

As she shifted her attention to Nina's badly-injured stomach, she knew for a fact that the baby had died.

Who is inhumane and cruel enough to hurt a pregnant woman?

“It's... It's Aaron of the Gibson family.”

Nina quivered fearfully in Avery's arms, tears falling on the back of her hand. “Avery, don't go to him. The Gibson family is too influential. You might end up in trouble if you offend them.”

Her words struck Avery like a lightning.

The latter's mind went blank. Aaron of the Gibson family? Isn't that Xander's younger brother?

She got to know the eldest son of the Gibson family, Xander, through Cayden. Xander looks stylish and cool. He's a pretty nice guy, and yet his brother is a total b*stard?

Having no idea what to do to help, Avery comforted Nina for quite some time until the latter finally stopped crying. Seeing how weak Nina was, Avery decided to head to a restaurant nearby to buy her some oatmeal and health supplements.

On her way there, Avery was so preoccupied with her friend's plight that she even forgot that she had skipped work that day.

When she returned to the ward with the food, Nina was lying on the hospital bed listlessly. Her eyes were puffy from all the anguished crying.

Heartbroken, Avery approached her friend with the oatmeal in her hand and gently coaxed her into taking a few mouthfuls.

Nina, who had a poor appetite, merely took a few bites. After that, Avery fed her some medicine and sat silently beside her bed. As she held Nina's freezing hand, she shut her eyes in distress.

Her heart wrenched for Nina. Concurrently, she could feel uncontrollable anger welling up in her chest.

Everything happened because of me. If Dylan didn't kidnap Nina, Nina wouldn't get violated by Aaron. She wouldn't get pregnant and be forced to lose her baby. Look at her... She even got injured. Back then, when Dylan insisted to be with me, I wasn't the only one who got hurt. I dragged Nina into this. All of this has nothing to do with her. I feel so guilty for what happened to her.

Once again, Nina's tears fell quietly on the white bed sheet.

Although she might appear to be a talkative and vibrant person, she was in fact a conservative and thin-skinned girl.

That night, she was pinned under Aaron, tormented by him in all kinds of humiliating positions, and everything that happened that night was enough to tip her over the edge. To make matters worse, the fact that the man ruthlessly took her unborn baby's life caused her to fall into complete despair.

She had never expected that she would have to suffer such torture. Nevertheless, she had never once regretted helping Avery although what she did was redundant. Deep down, she considered Avery as her best friend. She was just heartbroken. My poor baby. I'm so sorry for being a weak mother. I failed to protect you.

Exhausted, Nina finally fell asleep.

Avery tucked her in and gently wiped the tears off the corner of her eyes.

Watching Nina sleep with a frown on her face and listening to her occasional whines of pain, Avery was disheartened. The look in her eyes gradually turned grim.

Before heading to Dylan's company, she instructed a nurse to take good care of Nina for her.
