Chapter 692 Cayden Placed His Fork Down

In Mocset, Avery went to the place where Cayden was attacked.

Despite knowing that two years had elapsed and nearly all the evidence had vanished, she still made her way there.

Sid took Avery there, accompanied by Heather, Vivian, and about a dozen bodyguards.

The incident took place deep in the wilderness.

The winding road extended like an endless serpent, bordered by imposing ancient trees teeming with vitality. Yet, owing to its remote location, the atmosphere of the place felt eerily still and uncomfortably cold.

“Avery, we're here,” Sid said, bringing the car to a halt at a spot with a rather expansive view.

After Avery and Heather got out of the car, they began looking around the place.

At that very moment, Avery's heart seemed as though it was laden with dense lead, burdened by a profound sense of sorrow and grief. She even began to tremble faintly, unable to contain the overwhelming emotions.

This was the very place where Cayden had been assaulted. The mere thought of it overwhelmed her with sorrow.

The location was nestled in a low-lying region, encircled by rugged mountain ranges. Unlike the abundant foliage found in other areas, the trees here were conspicuously sparse. A number of them exhibited signs of scorching, their branches charred and lifeless, unmistakably transformed into mere deadwood. Upon closer examination, bullet marks on several tree trunks became evident.

Sid pointed toward the ground beneath Avery's feet, his voice heavy with gravity. “Avery, right where you're standing is the very spot where Cayden's car exploded. It's where he lost his life. Take a look at those bullet marks on that tree bark. Prior to the explosion, there was evidently a fierce gunfight here... This terrain, being low-lying, is ideal for a sniper's ambush. It's been two years, so the government has long since cleaned up the crime scene. However, right after Cayden's incident, I was the first to arrive here. The investigation strongly suggested that he was likely the target of a sniper. After being struck, the assailant, in an attempt to cover their tracks, detonated his entire car...”

Sid's words sent a shiver down Avery's spine, making her feet, stepping on the withered branches and leaves, feel as if they had plunged into a nest of venomous flames.

The thought of Cayden being shot and then obliterated into a bloody mess was unbearable. Avery, her eyes welling up with tears, frantically began to sift through the fallen leaves on the ground as if she had lost her sanity.

The woman's two pristine, slender hands delved into the earthy-smelling soil, her lips moving constantly, desperately murmuring something as if she were fervently seeking something.

“Avery, what are you doing?” Heather observed something off about Avery.

Taken aback, she attempted to stop Avery but was forcefully shoved aside by the latter. There was a frenzied quality in Avery's gaze. “Heather, step aside. Cayden must have left something behind at the scene. I know my husband. He's always been meticulous. Even if he was ambushed, he would have left some clues behind.”

“Avery, even if Cayden left some clues, those traces would have long vanished by now. Besides, he was caught off guard that day. No matter how fast his reflexes were, it would have been impossible for him to anticipate that incident... Furthermore, even I found nothing after conducting searches. The incident occurred a long time ago, so everything has already been erased. It's even less probable that you'll find any clues now...” Sid advised gently and tried to reason with Avery as he grasped her, his heart heavy with distress, the weight almost suffocating him. “Please snap out of it. Stop wasting your energy.”

He shook Avery's shoulders with force, attempting to jolt her back to her senses. Through his persistent efforts, Avery slowly began to regain some of her sanity.

Indeed, she harbored deep regret for not having been present at the scene immediately after Cayden's incident.

Yet, at that time, Trident Group had already descended into chaos. If she had left back then, the empire that Cayden had meticulously constructed might have disintegrated entirely.

To salvage Trident Group, she found herself with no alternative but to remain in Ackleton, bearing the weight of profound grief. She assumed Cayden's responsibilities, overseeing the bustling operations of Trident Group.

Nevertheless, her inability to rush to her husband's side when he was in peril remained the deepest regret and guilt that weighed heavily on Avery's heart.

Following Cayden's tragedy, even her love rival, Wisteria, abandoned everything to come here and pay her respects. Yet, as Cayden's lawful wife, Avery had been unable to arrive in time. This inner torment haunted her relentlessly.

So, once everything at Trident Group had settled, Avery still made the choice to come despite knowing that coming here to uncover the truth might be in vain.

Cayden, I'm sorry. If I had been able to arrive here immediately after your incident, could there have been a better chance of finding you?

Tears welled in Avery's eyes, falling like rain onto the scorched yellow leaves beneath her feet.

Her right hand clenched into a fist, repeatedly striking the soft earth that was mingled with decayed leaves and lifeless branches.

The woman's hysterical anguish and sorrow were so profoundly moving that it brought tears to the eyes of anyone who witnessed it.

“Avery, please, don't do this to yourself. If Cayden saw you in such pain, it would surely break his heart,” Vivian said, wiping away her own tears. She half-knelt in front of Avery, offering gentle solace.

Avery remeined silent, her teers felling even more uncontrollebly.

Suddenly, her delicete hend seemed to come into contect with something herd.

Under the sunlight, the blood-red gem grew increesingly trenslucent, slowly unveiling e few cherecters engreved upon it.

Upon spotting those words, Avery gesped in shock, her hend instinctively covering her chest es her heert reced.
