Chapter Thirty Nine-1

The acrid scent of blood and smoke burned my nostrils as I ran through the forest. The shadows of the trees stretched around me,

twisted shapes casting eerie outlines against the pale light of the moon. My heart thundered in my chest, the sounds of battle ringing in my ears as the link with my mates filled with chaos.

"Umbrakins."

I'd heard the word before, whispered in ancient stories. Monsters born of the Shadow Weaver's corruption. They weren't supposed to exist anymore. For over a hundred years, they had been nothing but nightmares meant to scare children. Yet here they were, real and terrorizing my pack.

"How many are there?" I asked through the link, my voice trembling despite my best effort to stay calm.

"Too many," Elijah's strained voice replied. "We've taken a few down but they're faster and stronger than anything we've faced. Stormi, don't engage recklessly. Please."

I didn't answer, my focus sharp as I pushed myself to run faster. My glowing wolf form illuminated the forest around me, the soft silver light an odd contrast to the darkness closing in.

When I broke through the treeline, chaos greeted me.

The pack grounds were unrecognizable, overrun by the hulking forms of the umbrakins. They moved like shadows, their pale, hairless bodies contrasting grotesquely with their wolf-like snouts. Their claws gleamed in the moonlight, dripping with blood. All around me, wolves and humans fought desperately, their cries of pain and rage filling the air.

I didn't have time to process it all. A guttural growl ripped through the air, and I turned just in time to see one of the creatures tearing into a man. His screams cut off abruptly as blood splattered across the ground. My stomach churned, but I didn't hesitate.

With a snarl, I leaped at the umbrakin, slamming into its side. It staggered but recovered quickly, turning to swipe at me with razor sharp claws. I dodged, my glowing fur barely escaping its grasp. My teeth found its arm, and I bit down hard.

The umbrakin shrieked, a sound so piercing it made my ears ring. It thrashed violently, throwing me off before I could do more damage.

A blur of movement caught my eye, and suddenly Elijah was there, his fist glowing with golden energy. He slammed it into the umbrakin's chest, sending it flying several feet before it hit the ground with a sickening crunch.

"Elijah!" I gasped, staring at him in shock.

His fists still shimmered faintly, and in his other hand, a barrier of golden light flickered into existence, deflecting an incoming attack from another umbrakin. He glanced at me briefly, his expression grim.

"Stormi, focus!" he shouted, punching another creature that lunged at him.

Before I could respond, another umbrakin charged at me. I sidestepped, slashing

at its side with my claws. It howled in pain, but it wasn't enough to stop it. It

lunged again, and I barely managed to duck under its attack.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alex. Flames erupted from his hands as he set one of the creatures ablaze. The umbrakin writhed, its screams echoing as its body disintegrated into ash.

"Alex!" I called, trying to warn him as another umbrakin closed in behind him.

Before the words left my mouth, I was already moving. I tackled the creature, pinning it to the ground. My jaws found its neck, and with a powerful bite, I ended its life.
