Jennifer was in the middle of a lively conversation with a few wealthy ladies when Charlotte walked over.

“Jennifer,” Charlotte said, her tone even, “I’m not giving the speech. You’re the chair of the foundation–you’re the best person for it.”

Jennifer shot her a glance, her expression unreadable. “I’m giving you a chance to shine. When Roxanne asks why you didn’t take it, don’t turn around and blame me. It was your call.”

“Got it.” Charlotte nodded, then turned and walked away, showing no interest in continuing the conversation.

Jennifer wasn’t doing this for Charlotte’s benefit—it was just to appease Roxanne. And since Charlotte didn’t care, she wasn’t about to waste her energy playing along.

The auction was winding down as Jennifer took the stage for her closing remarks. The evening was about to transition into dinner when a commotion broke out nearby.
