Sergio’s group hadn’t even had the chance to fight back when the police swooped in and subdued them.

Ellie stood frozen, feeling like she’d seen the man in military uniform before, but she was sure they had never met.

As the man stepped closer to Whitney, Ellie instinctively took a step back.

Whitney looked at the man, her vision blurring more and more. When their eyes locked, Whitney’s shocked expression broke the silence. “I thought I’d never see you again in this lifetime!”

Before she could finish, tears began to flow.

Jason, seemingly oblivious to everything else, pulled Whitney into his arms, his voice gentle and reassuring. “You risked everything for me; how could I let you lose?”

Ellie watched the two embrace, feeling a rush of emotions. She had known Whitney long enough to understand her story- how she had hidden her marriage from her family.

Ellie had heard in the bar that Whitney was waiting in this strange city for her husband to return. And now, here he was, finally back.

“Ellie,” Joanna approached, grasping Ellie’s hand. “Are you hurt?”

Ellie shook her head. “Mom, let’s move over there and not disturb them.”

Ellie tried to pull her mother away, but Joanna pushed her aside, stepping towards Whitney and Jason. Ellie hurried to follow.
