Meanwhile, in the CEO's office at Trident Group.

“Mr. Moore, I'm really sorry, but I can't be Ms. Rumpley's defense attorney anymore,” Weston said as he stood in front of Cayden's table with a pale face.

The strongest emotion he felt at that moment was guilt. After all, Cayden's involvement in that case was a great contribution to his success.

Then, Weston cautiously sneaked a glance at Cayden, who was lazily leaning back on his chair as the sunlight outlined his profile.

At that moment, Cayden was smoking, and the man's furrowed brows were a sign of his foul mood.

“The reason.” Cayden flicked the cigarette, his expression impassive.

“Xenia is back,” Weston started, the complicated feelings he was experiencing visible on his face. “I owed her too much. Because of me, she even... had a hysterectomy. I didn't know that I'd hurt her so deeply. I've always wanted to fix my mistakes, but she never gave me the chance to. Xenia has always been a prideful woman, and she has never asked anything from me but this.”

“Is Xenia Dylan's defense attorney?” Cayden was a smart man, and he immediately figured out what was going on.

“Yes,” Weston replied as he clenched his right fist.

Without a doubt, Cayden knew what happened between Weston and Xenia in the past.

Xenia was known to be a proud, talented lawyer and a skilled sophist.

As expected, she had since made a name for herself as an excellent lawyer.

However, Xenia was never picky with the cases she took. As long as the payment was good, she would take on the case even if the one she was defending was an atrocious individual. Therefore, Xenia was a lawyer whose moral ethics was questionable.

Weston continued, “Mr. Moore, I've already contacted my senior, Euno Shaw, for you. He's one of the best lawyers at Perpetuity Legal Services. He previously specialized in international cases, so he's known by many locally and overseas. I'm quite close to him, so I recommended he take over Ms. Rumpley's case. He has already agreed to it. Here are his details.”

With that, Weston handed Euno's document to Cayden.

However, Cayden did not read the papers. He furrowed his brows and mulled over the matter for a while.

Then, he said, “All right. Let Euno take over the divorce case.”

Weston let out a sigh of relief.

However, what Cayden said next made Weston's heart lurch. “It's best that you deal with your matter with Xenia as quickly as possible. You've relented to her this time, but what about next? What about in the future? It is a wild world out there, and no one will unconditionally let her have anything she wants like you do.”

Weston, who was about to leave, halted in his tracks. A beat later, he let out a soft sigh and exited the room.

...

When Nicole received the call from the detective agency, she was in the middle of dinner with William and Claire.

When she noticed the detective's number on the screen, she nervously cast a glance at her adoptive parents. Upon noticing them whispering to each other, she quickly ran to the balcony to pick up the call.

Claire took a chicken wing for William and commented on her daughter's sneaky behavior, “Say, did you see that? Our daughter has her own secrets now. With the way she's acting, it must be a call from someone she likes.”

William answered, “She's not that young anymore. If she meets someone right, she should get married. It's better than wasting her time in the entertainment industry. It's best for women to stay home and tend to the household matters.”

William did not understand what went through women's minds, for he had always been a chauvinist. In his opinion, one should seize whatever one liked.

That was how things were when he got together with Claire.

Their relationship was not turbulent at all, and not long after they started dating, they got married.

Claire was a knowledgeable and mild-mannered woman who was perfect to live with. That was the kind of woman William liked—pretty and good-natured. Hence, he was faithful to his wife.

Later on, he rose in ranks, but the two of them remained loving.

Even though they felt a little remorseful about not having their own children, their adopted daughter, Nicole, was pretty and obedient, so those feelings of regret faded away.

Back to the present, Claire disagreed with William's words. After all, if not for him, she would have entered the entertainment industry. That was a dream she had for years.

However, Claire was used to going along with William's words for she dared not disagree out loud, but her brows did knit a little. “You have seen the man our daughter is interested in. I saw his photo in the magazine Nicole bought. The young man looks like a good person. Do you think he'll look very different from the photos? He should be quite capable to be able to manage such a big company.”

Claire was worried that Cayden would look vastly different in person in comparison to his photos.
